Driving on the Isle of Harris

A passing place road sign on the Isle of HarrisThe Isle of Harris offers drivers a truly enjoyable experience that is almost unique in the United Kingdom. Most of Harris is serviced by a single track road with only short tracks of double track. The navigation of Harris can pose some problems for the driver who hasn't had the pleasure of visiting these islands before now.

The roads of the Isle of Harris twist and turn, rise and fall, in irregular patterns in such a way that there are many places where it is not possible to see oncoming traffic. It is therefore extremely important that you take the utmost care and pay perfect attention to the road as you dirve.

A passing place on the roadThe amazing scenery, of awesome beaches and imposing mountains, and the high chance that you will witness the most beautiful of creatures in the native habitat, such as Golden Eagles, staggs and deer, may lead many dirvers to distraction. However you really must consider that this paradise is also home to a small number of people who will be going about their daily business. If you think you are going to be taking in the scenery consider pulling into a nearby passing place to allow any traffic behind you to pass. There is nothing more dangerous than a tourist suddenly braking for no reason other than to take in the sights. Please consider others at all times and nobody will mind but if traffic builds up behind you do not be surprised if you are met by an unfriendly frown as cars are eventually allowed to pass.

Traffic on HarrisOne of the beauties of the Isle of Harris is the fact that there isn't that much traffic. Sometimes there are more bicycles than cars but there are times, such as when a ferry has just docked, that a bunch of traffic can suddenly appear. At all times it is best to allow traffic to flow smoothly, sometimes some may be in a rush to catch a ferry and they will appreciate being allowed to pass. In many places double track road will suddenly revert to single track. In such stretches of road it is very important that you allow any oncoming traffic to exit the single track before you enter. Following a few simple rules will ensure that you thoroughly enjoy your driving without incident. Most of all we wish you have a wonderful time while on Harris.
